80 nabbed in ‘Ops Valentine’ by S’gor religious officers
By ZUHRIN AZAM AHMAD
PETALING JAYA: Eighty people were nabbed by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department in “Ops Valentine” which started on Sunday night and ended early Monday.
Department’s public relation officer Nurhamizah Othman said they would be charged under the Selangor State Syariah Criminal Enactment 1995 with committing “khalwat” (close proximity).
The offence carries a fine of not more than RM3,000 or two year’s jail or both.
Nurhamizah said 61 people were also hauled up in the nine-hour operation for indecent behaviour and had been enlisted for counselling sessions with the department.
She said the operation, which involved local authorities and the National Anti Drug Agency, was led by the department’s enforcement chief assistant director Mohd Rais Rashid.
She said it started at 8pm on Sunday and was conducted in two phases with the first being a campaign on the ruling forbidding Muslims from celebrating Valentine’s Days.
“It was concentrated at lakes and recreational parks in the state where enforcement officers also issued orders to 60 people found loitering to leave the areas.
“The second phase involved raids on budget hotels throughout Selangor,” she said.
Selangor’s Education, Higher Education and Human Resources Development committee chairman Dr Halimah Ali had said that the problem of illicit sex was becoming increasingly serious and named Valentine’s Day, Merdeka Day and New Year’s Eve as being the traditional days when couples met up and engaged in illicit sex.
The Federal Territory Islamic Affairs Department also conducted similar operation in the city centre including at Titiwangsa Lake, KLCC Park, Tasik Bandar Permaisuri park and hotels at Jalan Pudu and Jalan Raja Laut.
A department’s spokesman said eight couples, aged between 20 and 50 were nabbed for khalwat.
They included a 19-year-old student of a higher learning institution who was arrested with her partner in a room of a budget hotel at Jalan Changkat Thambi Dollah, said the spokesman.
